It depends on the field. Some can be done in as little as 8 years (4 years of college, 2 years masters, 2 years doctorate), others can take up to 12 years or more. It depends on the subject (humanities usually don’t take as long as science or engineering), your motivation, if you go to the same place for your masters and PhD (staying in the same place and same field takes less time), your particular subject and how you research it (do you need to build something? get time on Hubble? that can take longer), and how well you and your adviser get along and how much help he/she is.

It depends whether you are going to do your master’s and and your doctorate full-time and without taking any breaks between degrees.

Assuming you have money to support yourslef and pay your fees, it is going to take you three years for your bachelor’s degree, another one or two for your master’s and three years for your doctorate, making a total of 7 or 8 years.

In practice it takes many people much longer. Some folk take a job after their bachelor’s degree and do their master’s and doctorate on a part-time basis. You can reckon that two years of part-time study is equivalent to one year of full time.

Some doctoral students work on their PhDs internmittently for years amassing the necessary evidence to establish their thesis. I know PhDs who became doctors in their twneties and others who did not complete their doctorate until they were in their forties or fifties – or even older. I recently heard of a case of a man of over 90 who finally got his PhD!

As others have posted, it depends on the field of study. You have to complete 4 years of college for any field–it’s the doctoral program which is the variable. Unless you’re pursuing a professional doctorate (JD, MD, etc), within any field it varies still depending on your own specific project….and to contradict eri’s otherwise good advice, humanities doctorates can take a very long time as well (I was a history major in college, and my advisor took 12 years full time to complete his).

The good news, though, is that you should only pursue a doctorate if you’re truly passionate about the field and topic…in which case “number of years” is less important because you’re actually doing what you’ve set out to do for a career.

To further explain my exception above, the professional graduate doctorates are more predictable…they have a set length, and unless you take time off or fail out. An MD is 4 years, a JD is 3 years, and so on.

College (four years), med school (4 years) for a total of eight more years. You’d have to really like school. Depending on what field you want to go into maybe another 2 more years for specialized fields.

well to get to doctoral degree, you need your bachelors and masters.

    bachelors takes 4 years.
    masters takes 2 years
doctoral degree takes about 5 years.

so in all its 11 years. But it depends on how fast you complete all your courses. But my best advice is to don’t think about the time it takes.. just think about the achievement and sucess you will get after. Good thinks comes to those who wait. If it’s your dreams then go for it.. Don’t let time, or years on anyone hold you back.
